 The capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal was built on the site of 11th century city of Bhojpal. It was founded by legendry King Raja Bhoj who is credited with having constructed the lakes around which the city is built. The present city was laid out by the Afghan Chief Dost Mohammed Khan, who was incharge of Bhopal during Aurangzeb's reign, but took advantage of the confusion following Aurangzeb's death in 1707 to carve out his own small kingdom.

 After 25 years of patient suffering, a court finally convicted seven officials of the erstwhile Union Carbide India Limited on charges of criminal negligence. The convicts were sentenced to two years of jail. Among those guilty were leading industrialist Keshub Mahindra, Vijay Gokhale, J Mukund, S P Chaudhary, K V Shetty, Kishore Kamdar and S I Quereshee. The eigth convict R B Chaudhary died during the course of the trial.

On the tragic night of December 3rd, 1984, exactly five past midnight in Bhopal, 40 tonnes of deadly methyl isocyanate (MIC), a toxic gas used in the manufacture of pesticides leaked out from the Union Carbide's pesticide plant located in a densly populated area surrounded by slums in Bhopal. Within short span, helped by the wind, the deadly gas engulfed major part of Bhopal's Old City as well as some parts of New Bhopal.
