Bhopal - Cleaning the cobwebs in the cupboards

cobwebThe delayed and callous court verdict on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy has triggered a series of investigations and has lead to the unearthing of certain facts which bring to light the corrupt and inhuman attitude of our ministers. The accountability of the then prime minister Rajiv Ganchi, the then Chief Minister Arjun Singh and many others is now being questioned. The media framed 10 questions and placed them before Arjun Singh and asked him to give an answer to all the questions within 24 hours. While the Congress has nothing concrete to say, the BJP and the Left parties are all set to go the roots of the issue. They are even opposing the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, 2010, which is pending before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology.
Though there are many misconceptions regarding the compensation limit, liability on foreign suppliers etc., the bill is actually considered to bring speedy compensation to the nuclear victims, unlike the victims of Bhopal. According to this "no-fault" bill, the plant operator is compelled to pay compensation irrespective of the cause of the accident. The clause 16 of the bill provides that the claims commissioner shall make his award within three months of the incident, and ensure that the payment reaches the victims within further 15 days.
