The Election Commission team that visited Bhopal to supervise the preparations for the second phase of polls in the State, praised the State authorities for peaceful conduct of the first phase. Voting for second phase would be held tomorrow in remaining 16 constituencies of state. The team addressed a meeting of administrative officers here on Sunday. Election Commissioners S.Y. Quraishi and V.S. Sampath instructed the authorities to seal inter-State borders before the commencement of the second phase polls in the State’s 16 Lok Sabha constituencies. They also called for border sealing of constituencies where polls had already been conducted in the first phase. Regarding the controversy over photographs of BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and Sadhana Singh, wife of CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan, casting their votes, Mr. Quraishi said the complaints in this regard were being monitored and any action could be taken only after obtaining sufficient evidence. The State as well as national media carried pictures of the two casting their votes, which is a gross breach of poll confidentiality and the secret ballot system. Unlike other States with a naxal presence, Madhya Pradesh did not witness naxal violence during the first phase polls. The State has several districts with considerable Naxal presence, including Balaghat, Dindori, Mandla and Umariya. |
