 The capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal was built on the site of 11th century city of Bhojpal. It was founded by legendry King Raja Bhoj who is credited with having constructed the lakes around which the city is built. The present city was laid out by the Afghan Chief Dost Mohammed Khan, who was incharge of Bhopal during Aurangzeb's reign, but took advantage of the confusion following Aurangzeb's death in 1707 to carve out his own small kingdom.

As the case of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy is gaining momentum after a callous judgement by the court, sentencing the convicts to 2 years of jail and then granting them bail, the fact that the ministers, top officials and the UCIL were hand in glove, right from the time the mishap occurred on 3rd Dec., 1984, the fishy escape of Anderson from India to the US and followed by the 25 years of suffering of the people of Bhopal and the convicts eluding the courts.

Ever since the court gave its verdict and the public, the press and the opposition reacted, demanding justice, Arjun Singh broke his what seemed to be a long silence this morning. "I didn't let Anderson go", he lashed out. However, the 79 year old veteran indicated that the Bhopal Gas Tragedy finds a place of importance in his biography to be released soon. According to then deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy, Gordon Streeb, when Anderson was arrested in Bhopal he (Streeb) “immediately contacted the foreign ministry and was assured the government of India will honour its commitment to provide Anderson safe passage in and out of India”.

Three dozen passengers of a Hyderabad-bound Jet Airways flight had a miraculous escape at Bhopal Wednesday morning when the nose wheel of the aircraft came off just as it was taxiing towards the runway, an airport official said.
