Birds of Bhopal

I tried searching the internet for Bird Species around Bhopal and found a very nice site Bhopal Birds. This site has a very comprehensive database of Bird Species found around Bhopal with their features and description. It seems the above site is done by some very serious birder of whom I can never be a match. My intention of starting this section on my site is not to replace or compete with such massive resourceful site having detailed information on Birds of Bhopal. Instead, I intend just to catalog sightings done by me. I am told that there is a very active bird lover group in Bhopal. Unfortunately, I haven't interacted with them, maybe I should soon. Maybe I will try and contact them and do some birding with them in winters of 2016.
As of now the 4 major tools that I have are:
- Long Zoom Point and Shoot Camera, Sony HX 100. With 30X of zoom that equates to SLR equivalent of 27-810mm. I found it to be my best economical birding tool, 800 mm of Lens on SLR costs a fortune. Moreover, as I am not a professional photographer nor do I intend to sell my bird pics, quality from a small sensor is perfect for sharing on web/facebook/iInstagram
- If I am not looking at birds through my camera than I am looking at them through my Olympus 8 x 40 DPS I Binoculars. I think it's a great budget optical tool to observe flying angels.
- Canon EOS 600D SLR camera with 55-250 mm lens. Not my favorite companion. Though the camera body is quite good, the lens is too weak for Birding. Hoping to own at least a 400 mm or 150-600 mm some day.
- Vanguard Alta Pro 263 AB 100 Aluminium Tripod with Ball Head. It gives me lot of stability and rests to my hands while patiently waiting for Birds to give right pose. Earlier I had an unbranded heavier but unstable tripod, which I accidentally broke trying to capture a Black Billed Magpie in Ladakh. Light weight and stability give me more freedom.
Though I have done some bird photography in other parts of the country too, I will dedicate this site only to Bird of Bhopal. That is Bird Sightings in and around Bhopal only. One bird at a time and without any commitment on the frequency of posts, so the postings will be an ongoing process for as long as it lasts. Places in Bhopal for Bird Watching: Everywhere and anywhere. Though it is very difficult to sight birds in the hassle of MP Nagar these days, I still remember the time when sparrows, crows and doves were a common visitor at our Kasturba Nagar Home. Now we have to do some exercise to sight even the commonest of Birds. Best places in town are Dhanvantari Park near Kasturba Hospital in BHEL, Van Vihar, Ekant Park, Sair Sapata and Bhadbhada Area, Eco-Tourism Zone near Kerwa Dam, Kaliasot Dam and Laharpur Ecological Park near Katara Hills.
