Upper Lake (Bada Talab)
About this place
The Upper Lake — known locally as Bada Talab — is the heart of the City of Lakes. Created in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty, it spreads across roughly 36 square kilometres and supplies a large share of the city’s drinking water. Its VIP Road promenade is the city’s favourite evening walk, with pedal and motor boats from the Boat Club, the iconic Raja Bhoj statue on the water, and a sunset that turns the whole lake amber. The lake is a Ramsar-recognised wetland and a haven for migratory birds in winter.
